Is the Year 2000 Computer Bug (Y2K)  really going to affect your  life? Only time will tell, specifically 12:00am 1/1/00. Will the year 2000 spell the end of our society as we know it? We don't think so, however, some aspects of our society could be affected and it always pays to be prepared.

We at Survival Suppliers don't claim to have all the answers, but here is what we do know. We are located in Fremont Ca, East Bay - San Francisco Bay, just 20 minutes from the Silicon Valley. Is Silicon Valley prepared for Y2K? The companies that are at the heart of the internet; (Sun Microsystems, Cisco Systems, 3 Com, Hewlett Packard, Intel, among others), are reportedly asking their employees not to schedule time off during the 1999 holiday season. They will have key employees working over the New Year's Eve holiday. Why? Are not these companies the premier suppliers of computer technology? Don't they have some of the brightest minds in the industry? Haven't they fixed all of their computer systems by now? The answer to these questions is YES, extensive preparations have been made. However, they are still worried that unforeseen circumstances related to Y2K could still affect one or more of their systems and impact their operations.

If the leading edge companies in the heart of Silicon Valley are concerned that Y2K will affect their operations and the delivery of their products,  then every company should also be concerned.

How does this affect the average person? Are the companies that you depend on for food, water, electricity and infrastructure ready for the year 2000? The larger companies are probably ready, the smaller companies that supply that supply these large companies, maybe. The small independent companies at the beginning of the supply chain? Maybe not.

A global conference on the millennium bug preparedness concluded on March 3rd that no one would be too prepared for the arrival of the Year 2000.

Senate Special Committee on the Year 2000 Technology Problem

The US Senate recently  did a report "Investigating the Impact of the Year 2000 Problem". In the Executive Summary the senators state that while they believe the Y2K problems will not bring on the death of civilization, the Committee research has concluded that the Y2K problem is very real and that Y2K risk management efforts must be increased to avert serious disruptions.

The U.S. Senate panel said on March 2nd the millennium bug may set off civil unrest in poor countries, undermine economic growth in Asia, Latin America and Africa, and disrupt global trade in oil and other commodities.

What can you do to avoid a disruption in your life and family security? Have a plan. In your plan have emergency food, water and shelter. This is where we can help. Please take a look at our disaster preparedness checklist and  products page and start implementing your disaster preparedness plan today.
